American Nurses Association And Texas Nurses Association Speak Out Against Wrongful Prosecution Of Winkler County Nurses
The American Nurses Association (ANA), which represents the interests of the nation"s 2.9 million registered nurses, is joining forces with the Texas Nurses Association (TNA) to strongly criticize the recent indictment and prosecution of two registered nurses in Winkler County, Texas, for reporting to the Texas Medical Board their concerns about a physician"s standard of practice at the Winkler County Memorial Hospital in Kermit, Texas. ANA and TNA are gravely concerned about the chilling effect the county"s actions could have on future nurse "whistle blowers" who advocate for their patients in the nation"s hospitals. An initial hearing on the nurses" motions to dismiss the case was held July 15 in the Winkler County Courthouse but no rulings were made on any of the motions.

Growing Retail Clinic Trend Makes Few Inroads In Poor, Underserved Areas
Since 2000, nearly 1,000 "retail clinics" -- offering routine care like sports physicals and immunizations and treatment for minor illnesses like strep throat -- have opened their doors inside pharmacies and grocery stores across the United States. Retail chain operators proposed that the new clinics would improve access to medical care among uninsured or underserved populations. However, these clinics have been opened more often in higher-income areas that are less likely to be classified as medically underserved, according to a new study from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine published in the May 25 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine.

Stinging Insects Can Cause Real Summer Fears But There Are Real Ways To Prevent Them

The term Cnidophobia may be uncommon but what it describes is not. Cnidophobia is the fear of insect stings. Although a "phobia" may seem to be an overreaction to what some consider nuisance pests, homeowners must recognize the health threats associated with stinging insects. The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) reports more than half million people are sent to the emergency room every year due to stinging insects, which is why these summer pests must be addressed efficiently and effectively. "Yellowjackets and hornets are common summer stingers," said Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for NPMA. "As invaders of backyard barbecues, these pests are attracted to sweets and proteins, and thus people. However, stinging insects can be provoked by even the slightest movement - such as a swat. While their venom is no more dangerous than other stinging insects, both pests can become aggressive when disturbed, even accidentally, and tend to sting repeatedly, posing serious threats to adults and children alike." Although the fear caused by stinging insects can be real, there are also real ways to prevent such stings. The NPMA offers these specific tips: - Wear shoes, especially in grassy areas. - Stinging insects are attracted to sweets; do not leave drinks or food in accessible areas. - Do not attempt to remove a nest on your own or swing/swat at stinging insects; an aggressive reaction and repeated stinging may occur. - Keep windows and doors properly screened. - Promptly remove garbage and store it in sealed receptacles. - If stung and you have a reaction, seek immediate medical attention as reactions can be severe. - If you suspect a stinging insect infestation on your property, contact a licensed pest professional to remedy the problem.
