Nexavar® In Combination With Chemotherapy Shown To Extend Progression-Free Survival In Patients With Advanced Breast Cancer
Bayer HealthCare AG and Onyx Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced that their first cooperative group-sponsored randomized Phase II trial in advanced metastatic breast cancer met its primary endpoint of progression-free survival. The study evaluated Nexavar® (sorafenib) tablets in combination with the oral chemotherapeutic, capecitabine, in patients with locally advanced or metastatic HER-2 negative breast cancer. Study findings demonstrated that the median progression-free survival was extended in patients treated with Nexavar and capecitabine compared to patients receiving capecitabine and placebo. These results were statistically significant (p-value = 0.0006). In this trial, the safety and tolerability of the combination was as expected and did not show any new or unexpected toxicities. A complete data analysis from this study is expected to be presented at an upcoming scientific meeting.

Editorial, Opinion Piece Discuss Issues Related To Routine HIV Testing
A recent directive to streamline the HIV testing consent process in Massachusetts as well as consent forms "no longer hav[ing] to accompany test specimens to the lab," are bringing "the state closer to a CDC recommendation that clinicians provide HIV screening on an opt-out basis," according to a Boston Globe editorial. "The opt-out provision is at the heart" of legislation sponsored by state Sen. Patricia Jehlen (D) that would end the state"s requirement of written consent for HIV testing "and instead have healthcare providers inform patients verbally that the test is planned but that they can decline it," the editorial states, adding, "The Jehlen bill would help destigmatize HIV testing itself" (7/6).

Smoke-free Mumbai Sticker Campaign

Sticker campaign builds awareness for smoke-free Mumbai Nearly 50,000 colourful no-smoking stickers in English and Marathi were provided to Mumbai"s 24 wards during March as part of the Smoke Free Mumbai campaign. The project developed by The Union"s South-East Asia Office in collaboration with the World Lung Foundation (WLF) aims to raise public awareness of India"s smoke-free rules. The stickers supplement the "No Smoking" signs mandated by law and were designed to be displayed in private establishments ranging from restaurants to educational institutions. As part of the project, ward health officers and sanitary workers were trained on the need for clear "No smoking" signage, the way to identify the best sites to display this signage, the need to comply with the law and the penalties for non-compliance. In the second phase, The Union and the WLF will coordinate with the Action Council against Tobacco (ACT) and the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) and other local non-governmental organisations to assess the impact of the project. A survey will gather information on the actual number of stickers displayed and community awareness of the smoke-free law. Organisers plan to extend this project to other large cities in India over the coming months. Funding for this project was provided by the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use.
