Five New Swine Flu Cases Bring UK Total To 117
According to the Health Protection Agency (HPA), UK, there were five new confirmed cases of swine flu (H1N1), bringing the total to 117. The HPA"s laboratories carry out all testing of swine flu virus. The five new cases include two adults from London, two adults from South East England, and a child from the West Midlands. Two of them returned from a country where swine flu exists, while another is linked to a previously confirmed case in England - the s of the other two are still being investigated, the HPA reported. Nobody in the UK has died from swine flu.

CytRx's Tamibarotene Demonstrates Statistically Significant Anti-Tumor Activity In Animal Trial For Multiple Myeloma
CytRx Corporation (NASDAQ:CYTR), a biopharmaceutical research and development company engaged in the development of high-value human therapeutics, announced that tamibarotene, currently under evaluation in a U.S. registration trial as a third-line treatment for acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), showed statistically significant anti-tumor activity in human myeloma cells transplanted into animals. Multiple myeloma is an incurable malignant tumor of the plasma cells of bone marrow. Results of the trial were published in the June 2009 peer-reviewed journal Cancer Science (Volume 100, No. 6, Pages 1137-1143).

British Lung Foundation celebrity ambassador and ex Coronation Street actress Liz Dawn will be attending the NHS Innovation Expo on Thursday 18th June at the London Excel Centre. Liz will be meeting Secretary of State for Health, Andy Burnham MP and encouraging everyone to look after their lungs. Liz is heading up the BLF"s "Love Your Lungs" campaign during Breathe Easy Week (15th-21st June). Liz herself has the lung disease Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and will be talking about her experiences of living with the disease. COPD is an umbrella term for a group of lung conditions including emphysema and chronic bronchitis, and is currently the fifth biggest killer in UK. Liz Dawn, BLF Celebrity Ambassador says "Having a lung condition changed my life and affects me every day. I am looking forward to meeting Andy Burnham MP at the NHS Innovations Expo and talking to him about living with COPD. I will also be encouraging everyone to visit the British Lung Foundation stall and have a free lung test." Dr Noemi Eiser, Honorary Medical Director and Mollie Jackson, BLF Nurse Programme Manager, at The British Lung Foundation will be offering free lung testing at the event (18th-19th June) between 10am and 4pm.
